Seggiano is within easy reach of three World Heritage sites – the Val d’Orcia, Pienza and Siena – lying at the heart of Italy’s richest province in terms of nature and culture.
The village is probably Etruscan in origin; during the medieval period it came under the jurisdiction of the San Salvatore Abbey, later developing as an autonomous community. After 1265 it came under the rule of Siena, becoming a stronghold against the Aldobrandeschi family from the nearby Santa Fiora village.
Nearby are: the well-known wine-producing villages of Montalcino and Montepulciano, popular for their Brunello and Nobile wines; Pienza, created by a medieval pope as an ‘ideal’ city; Siena, with its famous palio horse race; as well as all the charming villages of the Orcia Valley. Just across from Seggiano is Daniel Spoerri’s Garden, an open-air sculpture park created by this famous artist. Guests can also stroll around the beautiful villages of Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovana which stand on Etruscan foundations; spend a relaxing day in the spa resorts in Bagno Vignoni and Saturnia or visit the impressive tenth-century Sant’Antimo Abbey, known for its Romanic architecture and stunning position. The ANTICO BORGO B&B lies at the foot of Mount Amiata, a superb natural park home to countless wild animals, including the wolf and wild boar. This dense woodland also provides visitors with a range of both summer and winter activities (mountain biking, hill walking, snowboarding, skiing, etc.), including barbecuing in the designated picnic areas.
There are three airports that serve southern Tuscany: Rome Fiumicino, Rome Ciampino and Pisa. Cars can be hired from all these airports. Alternatively, some local companies offer airport transfers.
